Homebound Delivery Service!!
|

The Library is offering free delivery of materials to Chatham Area Library District residents unable to visit the Library because of age, illness, or disability. Delivery can be short- or long-term depending on the patron's needs. Materials will be delivered to you door by volunteers from the Friends of the Library. If you or someone you know can benefit from this service, please contact the Library at 483-2713. The Library staff will then contact you and arrange delivery.

Trick-or-Treat for
Halloween Stories!
Calling all Creatures: It's time for some Halloween hijinks! Put on your costumes and head over to the Library for a night of fang-tastic fun and frightfully good booooooks.
Registration is not required for any of these fearfully fun programs:
October 20th at 6:30 p.m.: Scary and Very Scary Hour This program, designed for monsters 3rd grade and older, features scary stories in one crypt and very scary stories, if you dare, in the other. Ghouls and spooky creatures will be haunting the Library on this evening. Please do not bring younger children to this program.
October 25th at 9:45 or10:45 a.m.: Halloween Babytalk Lap-Sit. All Mummies, Daddies, and other caregivers are invited to dress your babies in costume and bring them to one of our Halloween Babytalk Lap-Sits. These programs are intended for parents/caregivers and their little ones, newborn-3 years, and features stories, fingerplays, and songs.
October 27th at 6:30 p.m.: Friendly & Slightly Scary Stories. This program, intended for little goblins through 2nd grade, offers friendly stories for the little ones or slightly scary stories for those who wish.
October 28th at 10:15 a.m.: Preschool Halloween Stories. It's Hallo-scream! Preschoolers are encouraged to come dressed in their costumes for our regular Preschool Storytime to hear fun Halloween stories and complete a Halloween craft.

"Read What You Love"
Book Group
for 3rd, 4th, and 5th Graders!!
The new Read What You Love book group is off to a great start!! Ball School Librarian Mr. Habenschuss will return on the second Saturdays of October, November, and December with new, exciting books. If you are in 3rd, 4th, or 5th grade, come at 2:00 p.m., meet your friends, and discuss awesome chapter books and why we love them. All genres are welcome!

Teen Trivia Night
Attention Teens! The Chatham Library is inviting you to help celebrate out tenth annual Teen Trivia Night, and we guarantee the night will be anything but trivial!
This annual Teen Read Week bash will take place on Wednesday, October 12th at 6:00 p.m.
All teens, seventh grade through high school, are invited to get a team of friends together and compete for fun and prizes. Teams will consist of 6-8 players, with prizes going to the top three winning teams.
Door prizes, pizza, candy, and soft drinks are included. Don't miss this chance to have fun, win prizes, and show off your knowledge all at the same time!
To participate, teams must register in advance by calling the Library at 483-2713.

The Outer Edge
Monday, October 17th, 6:00 p.m.: Storm Front by Jim Butcher (2000)
The first novel in The Dresden Files follows the character Harry Dresden, professional wizard and consultant to the police who finds his stale life suddenly enlivened by the presence of a rival in the black arts.
Bring food or snacks or get some from our café! We ask that patrons under the age of 18 have parents sign a permission slip provided by the library in order to participate. If you would like to join, please call the library and we will request each month's book for you.
Bite Into a Good Book
Wednesday, October 19th, 12:00 p.m.: Half Broke Horses by Jeannette Walls
Set in the American Southwest before WW1, this "true to life" memoir tells the story of the author's grandmother, Lily, and has been written in Grandmother's "voice." In her lifetime, Lily was a teacher, rancher, rodeo rider, fearless breaker of horses, and a ruthless poker player. Throughout amazingly difficult times, Lily remained "indomitable." (Publisher's Weekly)

Thursday, October 20th, 4:00 p.m.: The Most Powerful Idea in the World: A Story of Steam, Industry, and Invention by William Rosen
William Rosen tells the story of the men responsible for the Industrial Revolution and the machine that drove it-- the steam engine.

Introduction to Word Processing (Microsoft Word)
Join us on Wednesdays from 6:00 - 7:30 p.m.,
October 12th, 19th, and 26th
to learn basic skills needed to format, spell check, save, and print documents using Microsoft Word.
Registration is required, as space is limited. Please call the Library at (217) 483-2713 or visit the Circulation Desk to sign up.
Participants must attend the first session and should plan to attend all four sessions.

Writers' Group
Wednesday, October 26th, 6:00-7:45 p.m.
Come talk to other writers about your work. Whether you write poetry, fiction, or defy genres, you will find like-minded writers in this group.

Midday Movie

Join us for the Midday Movie on
Wednesday, October 12th, at 2:00 p.m. Admission and snacks are free, and everyone is welcome to attend.
This fall, the Midday Movie features the duo of director Howard Hawks and actor Cary Grant.
This month's Midday Movie is His Girl Friday, starring Cary Grant, Rosalind Russell, and Ralph Bellamy.
In it, Grant plays a newspaper editor who uses every trick in the book to try to prevent his ex-wife (and former star reporter) from remarrying a dull insurance salesman.

Friends of Genealogy

Members of the Friends of Genealogy (FOG) have scheduled their next meeting for Sunday, October 16th, 2:00 p.m.
Topics of interest related to genealogy are on the agenda. FOG members share research techniques, websites, and other resource information.
To save on printing and mailing costs, members of FOG are asked to give their email address to the Library to receive their agenda electronically.
