What is the Memory Lab?
The Memory Lab is a do-it-yourself (DIY) space where library patrons can digitize, edit, and preserve personal media such as:
-
Home movies on videotape
-
Photographic prints, slides, and negatives
-
Audio cassette tapes
We provide the equipment and basic assistance to help you get started. From there, it’s in your hands—you control the process using our step-by-step guides. The goal is to help preserve irreplaceable memories that are at risk of physical deterioration or becoming unusable due to outdated technology.
Make an Appointment
Before using the Memory Lab, please schedule an appointment through one of the following methods:
- Email: [email protected]
- Phone: 217-483-2713
- Online: Schedule here
You may reserve time at multiple stations during a single appointment.
How long will it take?
-
Video & Audio Tapes: Digitization happens in real time. For example, a 2-hour VHS tape takes 2 hours to digitize. We recommend digitizing no more than 2 hours at a time and allowing an extra hour for file conversion.
-
Reel-to-Reel Film: Each 2-minute reel takes approximately 30 minutes to digitize.
-
Scanning Photos & Slides: Speed depends on the resolution you select. High-resolution scans (especially from slides/negatives) may take several minutes per image.
