5-25 Proctoring
Long-distance or online learning programs and some professions provide the opportunities for independent study on the condition that exams be proctored and certified. In support of life-long learning, the library provides this service for administering examinations.
Student Fees
Proctoring service is free for Chatham Area Public Library District residents (ID with current address must be shown). Non-residents will be charged a $20 fee per exam to have their exam proctored, the fee needs to be paid prior to the start of the exam.
The student is also responsible for all costs associated with administering and returning examinations, regardless of residency.
Scheduling
- Appointments for proctored exams should be arranged at least one week in advance. Exams are proctored by Adult Services Department staff, subject to staff availability.
- Exams may not exceed four (4) hours in length.
- Exams are proctored during regular library hours. Exams must be completed at least 30 minutes prior to closing.
- The student must be on time for their appointment and is responsible for notifying the proctor in advance if they cannot make that appointment.
- Software downloads to library computers is permitted, if approved by Library staff.
Student’s Responsibilities
- Arrangement for their learning institution to provide the appropriate materials and contact information to the proctor. The proctor will not contact the learning institution to get exam materials or proctor forms, nor will Library staff contact students when exams arrive. Students must call to see if the exam was received.
- Photo identification must be presented at the time of the exam and must match the name on the exam materials.
- The student is responsible for providing supplies, such as paper, pencils, etc., that are not provided by the examining institution.
- The use of cell phones and/or any communication device is prohibited during the exam.
- Patrons may not leave the building during a proctored exam.
Other Provisions
- Library staff will fill out necessary forms in order to be approved as a proctor. Staff will not provide personal information such as driver’s license or Social Security numbers.
- The proctor will return proctor forms directly to the school when asked to do so. It is the student’s responsibility to provide postage should an exam need to be mailed. The library is not responsible for receipt of the exam by the learning institution.
- The library will keep an exam for 6 weeks from the date of receipt. After 6 weeks, the exam will be destroyed.
- The Library reserves the right to substitute a proctor.
